SMS
There was once a time when mobile phones were associated with making phone calls on the move. Hard to believe, but it’s true phones used to be phones. However, the biggest revolution that came with the popularity of mobile phones was the use of text messaging to communicate with one another. It may be surprising to know that SMS was not designed with its current usage in mind. SMS was first designed as a way for service operators to contact their customers with updates or other announcements, but it took off as a feature in its own right.
Since this time, texting has been having a large impact on modern life. We often hear that it is having a detrimental effect on our language, particularly spelling and grammar. Words like great become gr8, late becomes l8 and people becomes ppl. The argument against this, however, is that language is always changing and this is just another part of our ever developing way of communicating. Whatever the case SMS is here to stay and mobile phones will always be associated with it, as well as the original use of making phone calls.
